this has been a mixed-up, heavy-heart, girl-so-confusing kind of week. a couch-surfing, living-out-of-my-backpack, the-g-isn’t-running kind of week. a slow-mornings-on-someone-else’s-terrace, late-nights-battling-resentment-before-bed, long-meetings-full-of-new-script-pages kind of week. a job-interviews-and-friendship-implosions-and-weird-hair-days kind of week. one of those weeks when i’m caught between the desire to fast forward my life and the desire to soak up every second.
reading.

liars by sarah manguso, which i devoured in twenty-four hours and enjoyed immensely. parul sehgal eviscerated it in a review for the new yorker (which i also enjoyed reading, though i really liked the book). i also read this interview with manguso, and this one, and also this one (which also features emily ratajkowski).
this excerpt of men have called her crazy by anna marie tendler. (content warning for suicide, eating disorders, and self harm. take care.)
bowen yang interviewing chappell roan.
“some art is not for sale” by alice stanley, jr. — especially the below bit.
seeing.
la pasión según antigona pérez by luis rafael sanchez, directed by the amazing bibiana torres for repertorio español.
an excellent reading of the word of the day, a new play by cori diaz, directed by maya quetzali gonzalez.
a good girl’s guide to murder. (slate makes a case for it as “the next great teen detective show.”)
ari notartomaso singing brandi carlile is obviously everything.
hearing.
nothing like a little chill in the air to make me want to blast the music of sofía campoamor! particular shout outs go to “friend of mine,” her latest; “pretty,” also a recent one; “uninvited,” especially the bridge; and “red horizons,” a classic. (do i always do a double take when i see my own photography on the cover of her below album? yes.)
okay, actually, one more shout out: for “act of god,” an older song. more specifically, for this quatrain:
if i still can’t tell you how i feel
then what was god for?
if i still can’t tell you how i feel
i guess that’s what god’s for
making.
had our last day of fiddler pre-pro for a minute on friday. (lonny is off to minneapolis to direct a whole other show before we start rehearsals. real ones remember scotland, p.a.) i am still working through my notes and updating my paperwork. and so much research still to do…
closed submissions for the rootstock reading series! started reading scripts! feeling overwhelmed and amazed by how many brilliant emerging artists are out there working so incredibly hard!
finished a draft of act 1 of a new adaptation of an old play. i have so much research to do. sophie is being greatly encouraging. maybe next week i will have enough courage to tell you all what it is!
prepped for a meeting with a major regional theater about one of my shows. LOL / WHAT / ?!?!
met with a prospective agent and had a lovely conversation that made me at least slightly hopeful for the future. sent a truly silly thank you note that included the below paragraph.
caught up with my friend farrah, both to hang out and to get updated on the latest with her musical femboy!, which i’ve directed a few readings of in the past year.
sophie and i had a marathon good apples collective meeting this week and STILL didn’t get through our whole agenda. so much to do!
announced our cast for the upcoming reading of sophie’s play road kills with the frontera series! look at these brilliant actors! what a gift to work with them! you can buy tickets here! (check the content warnings! this one is a little gruesome! in a fun way! and also an intense way! wheee!)
